American Academy of Professional Coders
American Academy of Professional Coders 2011 Salary Survey
The results of the AAPC 2011 Salary Survey were just published on the AAPC website and in the Coder’s Edge monthly magazine. The results are great!! Nearly 12,000 coders responded to the survey, the results showed that salaries are climbing and coders who are certified and continuing their educations are benefiting the most. A growing demand for skilled coders in a tough economic environment demonstrates that the value these professionals bring to their employers.
Coders may take a variety of career paths especially now with health reform requiring an electronic health record and the coming changes of the diagnosis coding set from ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM in 2013.
What do coders make? The overall results show that wages have risen in the past 12 months and the average wage in 2011 for Certified Professional Coder (CPC) was approximately $46,800 which is up $1400.00 from last year.
Individuals with advanced certification earned more this past year on average. For example dually certified coders with a CPC and a CPC-H earned over $54,700.00 annually. This is an increase of nearly $4,000.00 since 2010.
